This full-size box springs was gifted to me by another member on our neighborhood "Buy Nothing" group. If I hadn't picked it up, it was headed to the dump. It fit inside the box of our pickup neatly. These are easy to pick apart to salvage the lightweight wood inside. I see them offered all the time on Craigslist. What about furniture stores that haul them off for their customers?
I recently picked up another free box springs that was already completely uncovered. The board laying on top is an example of the wood in that one, with nicely rounded edges. The staples can either be pulled out, or just cut off that section if you don't want to use wood with holes.
The project I am doing calls for 1 x 4 boards. Some of them are ripped in half at a slight angle. They can be as short as 12" or even 2". Each spinning wheel needs a 29" 1 x 4 for its upright piece. Depending on how much glue they might have used on this, I think I can get two entire spinning wheels constructed from it and extra pieces left over.
The actual measurements I am seeing in these is < 1" x 1 5/8", 2 1/2" and 3 1/2".
The one I got today has a wire frame inside it that is similar to the cattle panels that can be purchased at the farm supply stores. With its built-in spacers, this will be perfect to mount to the wooden fence for a garden trellis! And the recycled fiber padding can be folded up to use as a moving blanket.
UPDATE: Unfortunately, the 1 x 4's are used along the edges and have other boards glued along their length, so I was not able to salvage any of them to use in a spinning wheel. But the boards in one of the box springs had a kind of bird's eye pine that I was really excited about. I am using it in the wheel portion and oiled it to bring out the grain.
